Vehicle Tracking

The SLAM challenge

For fleet vehicles that are moving goods or providing mobility services, it's essential that their location is consistently tracked to create visibility and efficiently coordinate operations. In certain cases, relying on GNSS or GPS won't be enough, especially as the vehicle moves through tunnels, covered roads or highly dense city areas, which has little to no GNSS coverage.

How ArtiSLAM can be applied

By adding a dashcam, Artisense's visual inertial odometry (VIO) can be used as another means of tracking the vehicle's position, especially in GNSS-denied regions. In the case where greater positioning accuracy is required, clients can also opt to have map-based relocalization and/or wheel odometry to be additionally fused.

How Clients Benefit

  • Additional redundancies: In unforeseen chances that the main GPS or INS device fails to position itself, the VIO module is always there as a reliable safety net for continuous tracking of the vehicle's movements.
  • Extensive coverage: The vehicles' position is always detected even as it moves in GNSS-denied environments, giving better traceability coverage overall.
  • Affordable alternative: A simple off-the-shelf camera is all it takes to gain far greater coverage as opposed to high-grade and prohibitively expensive INS devices.

Even in areas devoid of GPS/GNSS signals for prolonged periods eg. tunnels, ArtiSLAM’s VIO can maintain the tracking of a vehicles local motion and pose.
